Macrology ยท Last updated 13 October 2026

Macrology is a calorie and macro tracker. Your logs are kept on your device, and most logging (food logging, search, barcode scanning, custom foods, dashboard and progress) works without an account and without a server. An account is needed for AI estimates, for syncing across devices, and for Macrology Pro; what an account adds is described below under "Accounts & sync" and "Third-party services used."

What's stored, and where

Your profile, food log, weight history, water intake, custom foods, and meal templates are stored in your device's local storage (IndexedDB), inside the app itself. If you never create an account, none of it is uploaded anywhere, backed up to a cloud service, or visible to the developer. The only way it leaves your device is if you explicitly export a backup file yourself, from Settings, and choose to store or send that file somewhere. The one other place it can end up is your phone's own backup (iCloud on iPhone, Google's backup on Android), if you have that turned on: the operating system may include the app's data in it, and Macrology does not control, see, or have access to that backup.

Progress photos. If you add a photo to a weight entry, it is stored only on your device, in that same local storage. It is never uploaded, it is not part of cloud sync or the backup file, and it is not sent to the AI estimation service or to anyone else. You can remove it from the weight entry at any time, and deleting the entry, using "Reset all local data" or deleting your account removes it too. Macrology does not back photos up. If your phone's own backup is on, it may include them along with the rest of the app's data, and without such a backup they are lost if you uninstall the app or lose the device.

Meal photos. When an AI estimate of a meal is logged, the photo or description you used for it is kept on your device for 30 days, so you can see it in your log and ask for the estimate again. Like progress photos, it stays in the app's local storage: it is not part of cloud sync or the backup file, and it is only sent anywhere when you ask for an estimate, as described under Third-party services below. It is deleted after 30 days, when you delete the meal, or when you use "Reset all local data" or delete your account.

Accounts & sync

You need an account for AI estimates, for syncing your data across devices, and for Macrology Pro; everything else works without one. An account is created by signing in with Google or with Apple. Google only shares your name, email address, and profile picture with us for this, and Apple only shares your email address (or, if you choose Hide My Email, a private relay address that forwards to you), never a password for either. You can add the other sign-in method to the same account from Settings, which is what lets one account follow you between an iPhone and an Android phone. Accounts and sync data are handled by Supabase, our backend/database provider; a signed-in device's profile, food log, weight history, water intake, custom foods, meal templates, and the food pairings the app learns from your log are synced to Supabase's servers so the same account sees the same data on every device it's signed into. If you never sign in, none of this sync applies; your data stays on your device as described above.

Subscriptions & billing

Macrology Pro (AI food estimation) is sold as a subscription through the Google Play Store on Android and the Apple App Store on iPhone. Payment details (card numbers etc.) are handled entirely by Google or Apple and never seen by the developer. Purchase and subscription status is managed through RevenueCat, a subscription-management provider, which knows which entitlements are active on your account/device but not your payment details.

Third-party services used

If you create an account, your account and synced data are hosted in Sydney, Australia. Several of the services below are run by companies outside Australia, so data you send to them (for example a photo for an AI estimate, or a crash report) may be processed in other countries, including the United States.

Health Connect and Apple Health (optional)

In Settings, you can optionally connect Android's Health Connect, or Apple Health on iPhone, to automatically bring in weigh-ins recorded by a separate scale app (e.g. Renpho, Withings) instead of typing them in by hand. If you connect it, the app reads your weight records from Health Connect or Apple Health. It never writes to either, and never reads any other data type. Weight pulled in this way is stored the same as any other weight entry, under "What's stored, and where" above (locally always; also synced to Supabase if you're signed in). It is never sent to Health Connect, Apple Health, Renpho, or any other third party, and it is never used for advertising or shared with data brokers. A weight you enter by hand always takes priority: a reading brought in from Health Connect or Apple Health never overwrites a day you've already logged yourself. You can disconnect at any time from Settings, or manage the permission directly in Android's Health Connect app or, on iPhone, in the Health app (profile picture, then Apps, then Macrology).

Permissions

The app requests camera access solely for barcode scanning, the optional AI photo features above, and, only if you choose to take one, a progress photo for a weight entry. It is not used for anything else, and there is no background or continuous access. The camera is only active while you're actively using one of those features. It also optionally requests Health Connect access (Android) or Apple Health access (iPhone) for weight, described above, never granted automatically, and only if you explicitly connect it from Settings. The microphone is used only when you tap the mic button for voice input.

No ads, no usage tracking

The app does not include advertising or usage-analytics software of any kind. Nothing tracks how you use the app, what you tap, or how often you open it, and there is nothing to opt out of. The one exception is crash reporting (see Sentry above): if the app actually crashes or hits an error, a diagnostic report is sent so we can fix it. That's error diagnostics, not behavioural tracking.

Deleting your data

Uninstalling the app or clearing its storage deletes everything stored locally on that device; there is also a "Reset all local data" option inside Settings that does the same thing without uninstalling. Neither of these touches an account's synced copy in Supabase, since the whole point of an account is that your data survives losing any one device.

If you're signed in, Settings, Account & data, Reset data or delete account offers two further options: "Reset cloud data" deletes your synced data (food log, weight history, water intake, custom foods, profile) from our servers without deleting the account itself, and "Delete my account" permanently deletes the account and everything tied to it (sign-in, email, and all synced data) immediately, with no need to contact us. Neither cancels an active subscription; that's managed separately through Google Play or your Apple Account's subscription settings.

Children's privacy

Macrology is for people aged 18 and over. When you set the app up it asks your age and does not continue if that is under 18, and signing in to an account asks you to confirm you are 18 or older. If you never create an account, it collects no personal information from you at all. Creating an account collects only what's needed to authenticate you and sync your data (name, email, and profile picture via Google Sign-In, or email via Sign in with Apple). The app does not knowingly collect this from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, contact us (see below) and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date above will change with it. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
